Medical Experience
Kenneth H. Yuska, M.D. currently performs bone and joint
surgery at Meriter Hospital in
Madison, Wisconsin and at Columbus Community Hospital in Columbus, Wisconsin.
Dr. Yuska has practiced orthopedic surgery in Wisconsin
since 1978, when he settled in Marinette. He opened a practice serving Marinette General
Hospital and Menominee County Lloyd Hospital, which later merged to become Bay Area
Medical Center. This practice centered on traumatic injuries and included a variety of
orthopedic procedures. During this period, Dr. Yuska established an arthroscopic
(minimally invasive) knee surgery program at Bay Area Medical Center. He also performed
the first total hip and knee surgeries in the area, and served patients with work-related
injuries and those needing back surgery.
Moving to Madison in 1992, Dr. Yuska
partnered with Bone and Joint Surgery Associates until 1998. This practice centered on Meriter Hospital and Columbus
Community Hospital. The needs of the patients were the same in many ways, yet this period
allowed Dr. Yuska to learn to use a surgical microscope when performing lumbar disc
surgery. Using this microscope allows for smaller incisions, more precision and a quicker
recovery for the surgical patient.
For two years (July 76-June 78) Maj. Yuska served in the
US Army as a staff orthopedic surgeon at Darnall Army Hospital in Fort Hood, Texas. He
cared for the troops of the First Cavalry Division and the Second Armored Division. This
was just after the Vietnam War, but with 50,000 troops stationed on the base there was
still training injuries of all sorts. Dr. Yuska treated one soldier who was run over by a
tank and lived to tell the tale, and soldiers with parachute accidents, vehicular trauma
and just about anything you can imagine.
Medical Training
Dr. Yuska received his bachelors degree at the
University of Arizona, where a professor was a family friend. Dr. Yuska then attended New
York Medical College, receiving his Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1971. From there he was
off to a one-year Internship at the Robert Packer Hospital and Guthrie Clinic in Sayre,
Pennsylvania.
After his internship, Dr. Yuska received additional
training in orthopedic surgery at the Hershey Medical Center of Penn State University. He
received a year of training in general surgery and three years of training in orthopedic
surgery. Dr. Yuska was board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery in 1978
and holds medical licenses in Wisconsin, Michigan and Texas.
Professional Memberships
Dr. Yuska maintains memberships in many professional
organizations, including:
- The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery
- American College of Surgeons
- Mid-America Orthopedic Society
- International Intradiscal Therapy Society
- Dane County Medical Society
- Wisconsin Orthopedic Society
He served as president of the Marinette County Medical
Society for several years.
Community Interests
Dr. Yuska loves music of almost any variety. He has been
privileged to serve on the board of the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra since 1992, and to
serve as president in 1996 and 1997. He has seen the orchestra grow in popularity, and in
the strength of both its music and its organization. Hes pleased to see that the
Concerts on the Square are bigger and better than ever.
Dr. Yuska also supports the Rotary Club. He has been a
member of Madison Downtown Rotary since 1992 and was previously a Rotarian in Menominee,
Michigan. As a member of the Rotary Club, he works with other members to sponsor
scholarships and perform community service in the Madison area. Whenever Dr. Yuska attends
a medical conference outside Madison, he makes a point of stopping by the local Rotary
Club to meet interesting new people.
Dr. Yuska also has an interest in aviation. He
has owned an airplane, and for several years was a member of the Great Lakes Chapter of
the Flying Physicians. He also served his fellow pilots as an FAA Medical Examiner from
1981-1990.
In 1981 and 1982, Dr. Yuska accompanied Dr. Gerald Davis
on two medical missionary trips to Haiti. These trips were an eye-opening introduction to
the surgical needs in under-privileged countries. These trips strengthened Dr.
Yuskas resolve to contribute time and resources to such important activities as
these.
